Britt Anderson went along with everything the doctors said for nearly four years, but she was still dying at eighteen. The cancer had won leaving her without a future, without any options, and without control. No control, except for how she would leave this world. As Britt tries to end her life by going into the frigid waters she realizes her mistake. She struggles to get back to shore, to cry out for help, but her atrophied muscles are useless and the frigid water steals the breath from her chemo-scarred lungs. Despite her father’s attempts to reach her, she flies over the waterfall.
When Allister Parks finds Britt’s fragile body on the riverbank something calls out to him. Ignoring the warnings of his sister, Allister brings Britt back from the edge of death. The only problem is that an Eternal like Allister isn’t allowed to touch those who have already passed from this world. It is forbidden; an infraction punishable by death.
As Britt relishes her new cancer-free life and senior year of high school, her very existence threatens Allister’s place in this world. Allister struggles to keep Britt a secret from the Eternal Council and out of the hands of the only Eternal who already knows the truth: the one who stole her guardian angel.
EXCERPT # 1
“You were dead,” Allister agreed. “I touched you and brought
you back, only it was as something different than you were before.”
“Uh, I kind of noticed,” I said, waving my hands around my
body like a model showing him the latest fashions. “And that little thing about
being able to heal people is new. So what did you bring me back as?” The words
came out and I wanted to catch them and shove them back into my mouth. Fear
swelled within me as I realized I wasn’t sure I wanted the truth…if it was bad.
EXCERPT #2
Shaking my head, I pushed away from his chest, hard. “No.”
The force caused him to stagger backwards a few paces. He
teetered on the edge of the pit for a second as his eyes met mine and he
toppled over backwards, surprise filling his eyes.
“Allister,” I shouted in horror, dropping to my hands and
knees and scrambling to the edge of the pit in time to see him splash into the
lake below.
“Oh my god,” I cried out.
Britt Anderson -
18 year old who has been battling cancer for most of her teenage years and has
developed a strong will to survive. She has a keen sense of loyalty and this
comes out in her close friendship with her “three amigos” who she would do
anything for and they for her. She has never really been kissed before and has
never had feelings for anyone. Anyone that is until she meets Allister Parks.
Allister Parks -
180 year old “Eternal”. Aging at 1/10th the rate of normal humans, Allister has
seen and done a lot in his lifetime. But his life has been missing that one
thing he felt would never be his...love. That is until he comes across Britt
dying on the edge of a river. Now Allister must decide, does he do the one act
that is deemed “forbidden” by his kind and risk his life, or does he let this
girl who could be his one true love pass to the next world and risk never
loving someone?
Angelina Parks -
180 year old twin of Allister. Her level head prevails where her brother often
falls short allowing emotion to overwhelm him. She in many cases becomes her
brother’s keeper and that is a full-time job as of late. Loyal to a fault, she
is not willing to allow just anyone into their lives and especially someone who
is a product of the “forbidden act”. So try as she might, her brother often
takes a path she must then deal with and that is never an easy task.
Kendal Stratford
- Eternal who has become addicted to the intoxicating euphoria surrounding the
absorption of guardian angels from humans. Though he understands this to be
wrong, his meager upbringing for hundreds of years in Europe has failed to curb
this insatiable need. He is often caught on the wrong side of good and evil and
find the line always blurred when it comes to his addiction. He has never been
loved or in love, but there is something about Britt that draws him to her and
keeps him from taking his usual easy path.
Bastion - This
bounty hunter for the Eternal Council doesn’t need a last name. It is known
amongst all Eternals that if Bastion is looking for you, nothing good will come
of it. Always plotting and scheming, he never shows his hand until he makes his
move and by then, you can either run or fight. Most run as fighting Bastion is
often futile.
Gabe - The oldest
player in this game of cat and mouse, Gabe is actual the Archangel Gabriel who
is now an Avenging Angel seeking justice for the human race against all that
would imperil the balance of the world between the human soul and heaven. Britt
brings something to his world he has yet to experience and he can’t put his
finger on it. She is a mystery to him, but a mystery he is unexplainably drawn
to.
About the Author-
C.S. Yelle was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MN, the “almost” middle child of six. He attended Grand Rapids Senior High School where he enjoyed music and sports. He received his BS in Chemistry from Mayville State University, Mayville, ND in 1987. He taught 7-12 Science and coached for six years in several North Dakota schools and currently works as an Executive Account Manager in the Water Treatment Industry where he has been for over eighteen years. He is the father of four and grandfather of one. He writes novels, screenplays, and an occasional short story. He has been writing seriously for over 15 years and plans to continue until his fingers are unable, maybe longer. He currently resides in a Minneapolis, MN suburb with his wife Jennifer.
